A Wide look on Fire at Iskenderun Port

The recent earthquakes in Syria and Turkey have brought forth immense destruction and have affected countless lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with Syria and Turkey and all those who have been affected by this natural disaster.

Fire at Iskenderun Port

On 6th Feb 2023, A large fire burned and a plume of black smoke drifted high into the air on Monday above Turkey's southern Iskenderun port, in the Mediterranean Sea-side province of Hatay.

The region was hit by two major earthquakes earlier in the day, leaving widespread damage and loss of life. It was not immediately clear what was burning.

Maersk said in an advisory it was not yet clear when the port would return to normal operations.

"Given the situation at Iskenderun, we will need to perform a change of destination for all bookings bound for the port or already on the water," it said.

"We are currently planning to divert containers to nearby hubs within operational feasibility or hold at transshipment ports - including the Port of Mersin (in Turkey) and Port Said (in Egypt)."

A source from a container broker said the fire most likely originated in a container filled with flammable industrial oil, judging by the flames and smoke.

Other containers were toppled on their sides, thwarting access for the emergency services. Authorities had tried in vain to tackle the fire by boat on Monday, with damage nearby from the quake hampering access to the site.

Iskenderun’s container terminal was still closed due to “severe structural damage,” which forced the facility to halt all operations. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck southern Turkey on Monday had a significant impact on the port, toppling stacks of containers and cracking pavement. The physical damage is severe enough that container lines are diverting vessels to other ports, like nearby Mersin.

The quake also sparked a fire in the center of the terminal’s container storage area. Turkey’s coast guard deployed a vessel to apply water from the quayside, and the Turkish air force and army sent aircraft to drop fire retardant on the blaze. The fire spread despite these efforts, but was finally contained Tuesday night.

Now that the fire has been extinguished, Turkish vessels are delivering aid cargoes to Iskenderun for use in emergency relief efforts in the quake-damaged region. A massive search and rescue operation is under way to save residents trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings across a wide swath of southern Turkey. Time is of the essence, as cold winter temperatures create a risk of hypothermia for any survivors. The death toll across Syria and Turkey has reached nearly 12,000, with tens of thousands more wounded.

Among the relief vessels headed for southern Turkey are two Spanish Navy warships, the amphibs Juan Carlos I and Galicia. Juan Carlos brings a task force of 500 marines and a fully-equipped shipboard hospital, and the Galicia is carrying a cargo of aid supplies. Spain is also sending a field hospital with 70 doctors and two surgical units for deployment in the disaster zone.

Book we are reading this week and you must as a Seafarer

While the book is not specifically geared towards seafarers, it could still be an enjoyable read for those in the maritime industry who are looking for a lighthearted take on navigating difficult situations.

Many seafarers find that laughter and humor can be helpful in coping with stress and adversity onboard ship, and "Furiously Happy" offers a unique perspective on mental health that is both relatable to shippies and entertaining. If you're looking for a book that will make you laugh, provide some comfort and inspiration, and offer a fresh perspective on life's struggles, "Furiously Happy" may be a great choice.

This week Chelsa Maria George Paul is joining with us and sharing her thoughts on Life at sea. She is currently sailing in Anglo Eastern Shipping Company as a Deck Cadet.

Here is what she have to share with us,

Happily lost at sea

Women's empowerment and equality have been gaining momentum over the past decade in shipping. Still, a minority just cannot accept that changes readily – which we women can happily ignore, because we are not getting a feel of difference, due to the support of large group of people from shipping industry.

Everyday is not same on board and the challenge is acceptance. The hardest piece of the day was getting up at 4.00 am for the navigational watch. In any case, it used to be fun when I needed to go to the anchor or securing station at 12 PM, or promptly in the first part of the day. I found I was in the midst of the most lovely scenes adrift, with the shore lights and the open sky and with lots of stars and a cool breeze, which eased the pressure of starting it right on time.

The most fascinating thing, and what energized me, used to be the shore leave in various ports of the world.

Those dealings with the entire ship with valves, rags and cutters in my pockets, and wearing boiler suits frequently smudged with paints, grease and oil..

Indeed, sea as a place to work felt like my 2nd home !
