The real reason of Baltimore incident lies in Humans Circadian Clock

The recent collision involving the container ship Dali and the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has sparked discussions regarding the role of fatigue in maritime incidents. The incident, currently under investigation by the NTSB, has drawn attention to the significant impact of fatigue on crew performance and decision-making processes.

Captain John Cordle, a retired Navy officer and experienced mariner, sheds light on the issue. Drawing from his expertise as a Human Factors Engineer, Cordle emphasizes the importance of understanding the circadian rhythm in maritime operations. He highlights historical data indicating that a majority of maritime incidents occur during the natural circadian dip between midnight and 4:00 am, when fatigue is most pronounced.

Sharing a personal anecdote from his time commanding the USS Oscar Austin, Cordle recounts a near miss due to fatigue-induced lapse in judgment. His experience underscores the critical importance of managing fatigue, especially during nighttime operations.

In response to previous incidents where fatigue was identified as a contributing factor, both the Navy and the NTSB have implemented circadian watch rotations to align with the body's natural sleep-wake cycle. However, challenges such as manning shortages and excessive workload can undermine these efforts.

Recent studies, including one conducted by Cambridge, further support the correlation between nighttime operations and increased risk of collisions in the maritime industry. The absence of natural light during night watches can impair crew members' skills, heightening the probability of accidents.

Despite the tragic collision involving the MV Dali, Cordle acknowledges the possibility that preemptive measures were taken to mitigate nighttime fatigue, potentially averting a more catastrophic outcome.

As investigations into the Dali incident continue, it remains imperative for maritime stakeholders to prioritize fatigue management strategies. Cordle's insights serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to enhance safety and efficiency in maritime operations.
