Missing Teekay Third Officer Case Study - A Tragic Disappearance

In this case study, we delve into the mysterious disappearance of Cris, a Junior 3rd Officer onboard the JAOLONG SPIRII, a vessel owned by Jiaolong Spirit LLC and operated by Teekay Shipping. Cris joined the vessel in February 2020 and was in regular contact with his family and friends. However, on the evening of 23 April 2020, he was reported missing while at sea, leading to a search and rescue operation by the United States Coast Guard. Despite extensive efforts, Cris' whereabouts remain unknown.

The Events Leading Up to the Disappearance

Before his disappearance, Cris posted photographs on his Facebook account showing injuries to his face. However, the cause of these injuries was not explained, and it is unclear whether they are related to his subsequent vanishing.

On the fateful evening of 23 April 2020, Cris was called to the bridge to relieve the Chief Officer for dinner. After the Chief Officer returned, Cris left the bridge, but he failed to show up for his watch duties at 2000L. Concerned, the crew tried to reach him in his cabin, but there was no response. A search of his cabin revealed he was nowhere to be found, prompting authorities to be notified.

The Search and Family's Efforts

A search and rescue (SAR) operation was carried out by the United States Coast Guard, but unfortunately, it yielded no results, leaving the family devastated and anxious for answers.

In the wake of the disappearance, the Acosta family initiated a social media campaign to raise awareness about Cris' case and urged relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. The campaign, primarily on Facebook and in Tagalog, the principal language of the Philippines, aimed to bring attention to the circumstances surrounding Cris' disappearance.

Teekay Shipping's Response

In response to the family's concerns, Teekay Shipping took the matter seriously and engaged directly with Human Rights at Sea. They expressed deep sympathy for the loss of their colleague, Mr. Acosta, and pledged to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.

Teekay Shipping appointed a forensic consultant to investigate the matter upon the vessel's arrival at its first port of call. Additionally, both the Flag State of the Vessel (The Bahamas) and the Philippines Embassy were invited to send representatives to join the investigation.

Understanding the family's wish to be involved in the search, Teekay Shipping did not refuse their request. However, given the travel restrictions in place due to the ongoing pandemic, the feasibility of their attendance remained uncertain.

Conclusion

Cris' disappearance remains a tragic and unresolved mystery. The ongoing efforts by the Acosta family, in collaboration with Teekay Shipping and relevant authorities, demonstrate their determination to find answers.
