MSC Foundation and Mercy Ships International Forge a Path to Healing

In a landmark agreement, the MSC Foundation, MSC Group, and the renowned charity Mercy Ships International have joined forces to embark on a transformative journey. Together, they are set to build a purpose-built hospital vessel, poised to deliver free surgery and training annually to thousands of individuals across Africa.

On April 8th, Captain Gianluigi Aponte, Chairman of the MSC Group and MSC Foundation, alongside Diego Aponte, President of the MSC Group and Member of the MSC Foundation Board, and Don Stephens, the visionary Founder of Mercy Ships, finalized an agreement to initiate this groundbreaking project. With an initial donation from the MSC Foundation, this partnership underscores the unwavering commitment of visionary leaders to ensure access to essential healthcare for generations to come.

Captain Aponte, whose formative years were spent in the shipping industry in the Horn of Africa, holds a deep personal connection to the region. Witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by local communities, he was inspired to dedicate himself to enhancing healthcare accessibility, recognizing its profound and lasting impact. Collaborating with Don Stephens and providing vital support through Mercy Ships has been a fulfilling journey for Captain Aponte, yielding remarkable results. He eagerly anticipates seeing this new vessel set sail, extending aid to even more African communities.

Since its establishment in 1978, Mercy Ships has performed over 117,000 specialized surgical procedures, transforming lives with services ranging from maxillofacial reconstructions to orthopedic corrections for children. Committed to strengthening local healthcare systems, Mercy Ships has also provided training to over 54,300 local professionals in various medical fields.

The urgent need to improve access to surgical care in sub-Saharan Africa is underscored by Sierra Leone's Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, who highlighted the nation's staggering 91% unmet surgical needs. Through collaborative efforts, Mercy Ships aims to bridge these gaps, bringing hope and healing to those in need.

The forthcoming purpose-built hospital vessel, designed to enhance training capabilities, represents a significant leap forward in Mercy Ships' mission. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including six operating rooms and advanced training spaces, this vessel will enable Mercy Ships to expand its reach and impact across host nations.

The partnership between Mercy Ships and MSC extends beyond philanthropy, with MSC Group providing logistical support and expertise since 2011. From container delivery of supplies to comprehensive technical advice, MSC's contributions have been instrumental in facilitating Mercy Ships' operations.
